Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior.
Behavior analysis helps us to understand:
ABA therapy applies our understanding of how behavior works to real situations. The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or a barrier to learning.
The instruction plan breaks down each of these skills into small, concrete steps. The therapist teaches each step one by one, from simple (e.g. imitating single sounds) to more complex (e.g. carrying on a conversation).
The LBA and therapists measure progress by collecting data. This data can be collected by the behavior analyst , family members and program staff to review information about progress.
The instructor uses a variety of ABA procedures. Some are directed by the instructor and others are directed by the client .
Techniques used will vary depending on the severity of the client.
Autism looks different for everyone, and each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. Some autistic people can speak, while others are nonverbal or minimally verbal and communicate in other ways. Some have intellectual disabilities, while some do not.
Parents, family members and caregivers are encouraged to meet with their child's Behavior Analyst for trainings, so they can help support learning and skill practice for their child throughout the day.
If your son or daughter has a current diagnosis of Autism and has been prescribed ABA therapies, your insurance may cover all or a portion of the costs.
